The Surf and Hot Rod Sounds of Gary Usher

1938 - 1990

This page is dedicated to the surf and hot rod music created by Gary Usher in the early 1960s. Hopefully through this page, the music that Usher created will live on...not only for those of us who grew up listening to his music, but also for those who are unfamiliar with the California sound of which Gary Usher was an integral part.

Unreleased Usher Tracks Now Available From Sundazed!

Barefoot Adventure

Sundazed has done it again!  They have dug deep into the vaults and provide us with two discs worth of Gary Usher surf and hot rod tracks.  This release entitled BAREFOOT ADVENTURE features Gary and his troops' 4 Star Sessions from 1962 to 1966.  Gary and his troops play as The Four Speeds, The Sunsets, and The Competitors.

Of the thirty-six tracks featured on the set, seventeen of them are either unissued demo versions or unissued demo recordings. Listening to these unreleased demos, Ush once again proves that many of his demos could be released as completed tracks.

Other gems on this release include Bob Irwin and Al Quaglieri's interviews with Gary in 1989, one year before his untimely passing.  The interviews are interspersed throughout the CDs as they talk about specific songs or music that Gary was working on at the time.  Also included are two tracks that Gary performs with The Honeys:  YOU MADE A BELIEVER OUT OF ME and WAITING FOR THE DAY.

The cover includes a period photograph of surfers on the beach.  Labels on the CDs replicate the 4 Star label.  A nice touch in deed.  Besides being available as a two CD set, Sundazed has issued the album in a two LP vinyl set.

Author and Usher biographer Stephen J McParland has penned extensive liner notes which include some very rare photos of Gary during this time frame.

So if you are in need of some sounds to bring back the feeling of sand beneath your feet or the smell of burning rubber on two-lane blacktop, surf on over to Sundazed and order a copy!
